Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor

An Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (ABPM) is a small device that measures your blood pressure automatically over 24 hours. It gives doctors a clear picture of how your blood pressure changes during the day and night, while you go about your normal activities. This helps detect high blood pressure (hypertension) and check how well treatments are working.

What happens during the ABPM test?

- Cuff fitted: A blood pressure cuff is placed on your non‑dominant arm and connected to a small monitor.

- Automatic readings: The monitor inflates at set times throughout the day and night to record your blood pressure.

- Patient diary: You’ll be given a diary to note your daily activities and any symptoms.

- Appointments:

 - Fitting takes about 30 minutes

 - Removal takes about 10 minutes

Duration

2 appointments; fitting time - 30 minutes. Removal – 10 minutes. Monitor is worn for 24 hours in total.

Preparation Instructions

The monitor cannot get wet. No showering or bathing whilst the monitor is connected – we advise showering before your fitting appointment. Wear a loose, comfortable top for easy monitor fitting and comfort.

What is an ABPM?

It’s a 24‑hour blood pressure monitor that records readings throughout the day and night.

Why do I need an ABPM?

Doctors use it to check for high blood pressure and see how it changes during daily life.

Does the ABPM hurt?

No, it’s safe. You may feel the cuff squeeze when it inflates, just like a normal blood pressure test. This may be uncomfortable at times, but it quickly resolves after each pressure is taken.

How long do I wear the monitor?

You wear it for 24 hours, then return to have it removed.

Can I shower with the ABPM?

No, the monitor cannot get wet. Shower before your fitting appointment.

Do I need to prepare?

Wear a loose, comfortable top and follow any instructions from your doctor.
